1 What is Epsom salt?
Epsom salt is available in drugstores and pharmacies as an over-the-counter powder consisting of three components: magnesium, oxygen and sulphur. The powder probably owes its name to its bitter, characteristic taste. Chemically speaking, it is pure magnesium sulphate. Epsom salt is considered to be well tolerated and is odorless and water-soluble. However, it has a very bitter and salty taste. The crystalline powder is very reminiscent of salt. Epsom salt is also known as mineral epsomite or Epsom salt. These names are derived from the London suburb of Epsom - a well-known spa town where the valuable magnesium sulphate was first discovered and extracted from salt mines in the 17th century.
2 How is Epsom salt used?
The popular cure is used in various applications, but it is most commonly used for spa baths and to treat mild constipation. To treat constipation, 15 grams of dissolved Epsom salt should be taken in a quarter of a liter of water. Due to its laxative effect, Epsom salt can also be taken as a fasting cure or to empty the bowels in preparation for surgery. However, the miracle powder is not only popular as a medicine, but is also used as a skin peeling, as it makes the skin supple and particularly soft. Many athletes now also swear by Epsom salt as a bath additive. It is said to be very effective against cramps and sore muscles when applied externally.
