Finding the correct acupressure points for a cough
First, locate the last cervical vertebra on the back of the person suffering from a cough. This can be recognized by the fact that it protrudes slightly more at the end of the cervical spine than the neighboring vertebrae. From this point, count three vertebrae down. From this third thoracic vertebra, move both thumbs left and right about five centimeters outward towards the shoulder blade until the thumbs sink into two hollows. At this point, press three to six times in quick succession.
In our video, a hand puppet demonstrates how to find the correct acupressure points to relieve coughing and how to perform acupressure for a cough:
How often should acupressure be performed for a cough?
The acupressure described here can be performed up to six times a day as needed.
Does acupressure also help with hoarseness?
Acupressure also provides help for hoarseness. It does not matter whether the hoarseness is due to a cold or overstraining the voice. Press with your index fingers on either side of the Adam's apple next to the trachea. Then gently tap down the neck until you reach the protruding bones of the collarbone and press them lightly in a circular motion. This procedure should be repeated five to ten times with only short breaks.
Another helpful point can be found at the back of the head. To locate it, go from the neck up the back of the head until you find a pressure-sensitive spot at about eye level. Additionally, there is a complementary point on the inside of the elbow that can be massaged and pressed in a gentle circular motion.
Acupressure and Lifestyle
Even though acupressure helps with cold symptoms, one should not forget that our lifestyle and mindset also have a significant influence on the development of diseases. A healthy and balanced lifestyle is a prerequisite for health and well-being.
