Der Manuka Honig wird aus dem Nektar der Manukablüten gewonnen. Manuka, die Südseemyrte, wächst nur in Neuseeland. Das Besondere am Manuka Honig ist der Gehalt an Methylglyoxal (MGO), der bei einem heimischen Blütenhonig ungefähr bei 5 bis 20 mg pro Kilogramm Honig liegt, beim Bio Manuka Honig bei 600 mg. Der hohe MGO-Gehalt in Manuka-Honig ist ein Indikator für die besondere antibakterielle Aktivität des Honigs. Je höher der MGO-Wert, desto stärker die Wirkung gegen Mikroorganismen. MGO ist zudem hitzestabil und bleibt über lange Zeit wirksam.

Der Manuka-Honig ist für die innerliche und äußerliche Anwendung geeignet.

Was bedeutet der UMF- oder MGO-Wert bei Manuka-Honig?

Methylglyoxal (MGO) ist
eine bioaktive Substanz im Manuka Honig. Diese wird als MGO-Gehalt angegeben.
MGO ist für die antibakterielle Wirkung des Honigs verantwortlich.

UMF, der Unique Manuka Factor, wird nur von zertifizierten Herstellern in
Neuseeland vergeben. Es ist ein noch strengeres Gütesiegel als der MGO-Gehalt,
weil es auch die Authentizität und Reinheit des Honigs prüft.

Kann man Manuka-Honig auch in Tee geben oder wird die Wirkung dadurch zerstört?

MGO ist relativ
hitzestabil. Andere Enzyme, wie zum Beispiel die Glucose-Oxidase, die auch in
anderen Honigsorten enthalten ist, ist jedoch hitzeempfindlich. Aus diesem
Grund empfehlen wir, den Tee auf Trinktemperatur abkühlen zu lassen und erst
dann den Honig zuzugeben.
