The sun is shining, the temperatures are rising and you can finally relax in the garden or on the balcony again - but there is one small catch: the mosquitoes during the relaxing hours. They are annoying, never travel alone and leave behind scratchy, painful and swollen bites. There are a number of products designed to protect against them - from "bite-free sprays" to insect repellents for clothing. But you don't always have to use chemicals to protect yourself! Wondering what the best alternative would be? Clearly, natural essential oils are perfect for making your own mosquito spray. You only need three ingredients for this spray:

  • Alcohol (min. 38% vol.)
  • Distilled or boiled water
  • Naturally pure essential oils

    1 Why use essential oils?

    Essential oils are highly concentrated substances that are extracted from various parts of a plant, such as the leaves, bark or roots of the plant. An anti-mosquito spray with essential oils is a more natural method of repelling insects than spraying chemical repellents - for both humans and insects. Incidentally, the term "essential" means fragrant, transparent and fine. In addition to the known positive effects on the body and psyche, the scent of the oils can also be a helper. They mask body odor and thus help to keep mosquitoes away. To be sure that you are buying a natural product when buying essential oils, you should pay attention to a few statements on the label:

    • The German and Latin name of the oil
    • The Latin name of the ingredients
    • The ingredients should not contain alcohols or aldehyde. This indicates synthetic or diluted oils.
    • The formulation: "100% pure natural essential oil"
    • The method of extraction of the oil
    • The filling quantity in ml

    When making DIY bug spray, you should use a 100 ml spray bottle, as this is small, handy and perfect for on the go.

    1. 4 tablespoons of alcohol (e.g. Primasprit)
    2. 5-10 drops of the natural essential oil of your choice
    3. Fill the bottle with water

    You can also add 1-2 drops of lavender oil to the spray bottle. Lavender oil also has an antiseptic effect after an insect bite, cools and soothes the skin. Shake the bottle well before each use! Note: The effectiveness of natural essential oils is limited, so repeated application is necessary to achieve the best possible effect.
