What is Epsom salt?

Epsom salt is available in drugstores and pharmacies as an over-the-counter product. It consists of three components: magnesium, oxygen and sulphur. The powder or crystalline granulate probably owes its name to its bitter, characteristic taste. From a chemical point of view, it is pure magnesium sulphate.

Epsom salt is well tolerated, has a neutral odor and is soluble in water. However, it has a very bitter and salty taste. The crystalline powder is very reminiscent of salt. It is also known under the names Mineral Epsomit, English salt or bitter salt . These names are derived from the London suburb of Epsom – a well-known health resort where valuable magnesium sulphate was first discovered and extracted in salt mines as early as the 17th century.

What is the application of Epsom salt?

The popular therapeutic aid is used in various areas of application, but it is most often used for spa baths and for the treatment of mild constipations . To treat constipation, dissolve 15 grams bitter salt in 250 ml of water for internal use. Due to its laxative effect, Epsom salt can also be taken as a fasting cure or for emptying the bowels before surgical operation.

But the miracle powder is not only popular as a medicinal product, it is also used as skin peeling , as it makes the skin supple and particularly soft.
