Fall asleep quickly, sleep through the night and wake up refreshed the next day – sounds easy, but sometimes doesn’t work that well. There can be many causes leading to a bad sleep – such as stress, personal issues, or problems at the workplace. Anyone who suffers from difficulty falling asleep or who often sleeps poorly might quickly resort to chemical sleeping pills, but they are usually expensive and can be addictive. Natural sleeping aids are a mild alternative. They can help not only to fall asleep and stay asleep, but also tune our body. In this post we introduce you to 5 different natural sleep-inducing aids that support a healthy and restful sleep.

Natural sleeping aids as alternatives

To fall asleep more easily, it is important to relax and calm down. Natural sleeping aids can help to end the day and thus support a restful sleep. In contrast to chemical agents, they are not addictive and can also be used over a longer period of time.

Lavender oil – a true all-rounder

The calming effect of lavender oil is well-known and scientifically proven. In addition to the harmonizing effect, lavender strengthens and gives new energy when you are exhausted. It helps you fall asleep and also ensures a restful sleep. The all-natural oil extracted from the flowers can relieve restlessness and sleep disorders, and can be used for both physical and mental ailments. Lavender oil is ideal for nebulizing in a diffuser or as an ingredient in a pillow spray. You can find out how to make your own pillow spray HERE.

Stone pine oil – soothes the senses

The scent of the stone pine oil is reminiscent of a relaxing walk in the forest. This has a variety of positive effects on the body. Stone pine oil can help you to fall asleep more quickly and support a restful sleep. The natural oil also relaxes and calms body and mind. Stone pine oil ensures a calm mind, more well-being and serenity the next morning. Ideally suited for use in the aroma diffuser.

Melatonin spray – the perfect sleeping aid

The hormone melatonin is formed in the body from the neurotransmitter serotonin. The release of melatonin is inhibited by daylight and stimulated when it is dark. This is how it controls our sleep-wake rhythm by sending signal to our body in the dark that it is now time to sleep. For many people, however, the melatonin balance is disrupted, for example due to shift work or a long trip. The body’s own production of melatonin also decreases with age, which can lead to sleep disorders. Melatonin spray can be helpful here. It contributes to a shorter time to fall asleep and thus supports a restful and healthy sleep.

The Melatonin Spray “Schlaf schön” from Casida contains melatonin as well as vitamin B6 and lavender. Vitamin B6 contributes to the normal functioning of the energy metabolism and the nervous system. Lavender has a calming effect on the body and soul.

Valerian – a well-tried remedy

If people couldn’t sleep in the past, valerian tea helped them. Valerian is probably the most tried and tested remedy for sleep disorders of any kind and has been known for a long time. After about an hour, the natural sleep aid, prepared as an infusion drink, unfolds its effect. Sometimes the effect can take two weeks to set in, provided you drink the infusion daily. If you need a quicker help, you could also make a bath with valerian added. Boil 100 grams of valerian root in two liters of water, let it steep for 30 minutes and then add to the bath water.

Herbal pillow – natural aromatherapy

A pillow full of fragrant herbs can make us relax and sleepy. Depending on the herbs used, it can have a calming, pain-relieving or harmonizing effect. When you rest your head on the pillow, the essential oils of the herbs can unfold through body heat and herbs rubbing against each other. Fill a self-made or any cloth bag available with cotton or any non-chemically treated material, then add dried herbs such as lavender, lemon balm, marjoram or rose and orange blossoms. Now the essential oils of the herbs under your pillow are ready to induce a relaxed and restful sleep.

In addition to natural sleeping pills, there are many different ways you can try to get a better sleep. Sleeping rituals or eating and drinking properly are just a few examples. You can find out more about this in our blog post “How to sleep better?” .
